Bikaner – The City of Beautiful Palaces and Temples
An Overview of Bikaner
The desert town of Bikaner is located in the north-western region of Rajasthan in the heart of Thar Desert. The city was founded in 1488, Rao Bikaji, the descendent of Rao Jodhaji, on the land reclaimed form Jangaldesh, which was basically an area covered with barren wilderness. The city was located on the trade route between central Asia and the coasts of Gujrat and was considered to be an oasis situated in the middle of the burning desert sands. The city has a history of nourishing the rich Rajput culture, which Rajasthan is so famous for visitors from all parts of the globe come here to experience this culture and lifestyle.

Famous Tourist Places in Bikaner
Karni Mata Temple: This 600 year old temple, located at Deshnoke, is famous for the worship of rats. The temple houses countless black, grey and white rats, which are locally known as Kaba. According to legend, people who feed rats at this temple are blessed with good fortune. Visitors can place milk, sweets and grins in a large bowl which is put there specially to feed the rats. The temple also features an image of Karni Mata, who is believed to be an incarnation of Goddess Durga. The image portrays her holding a trident and it is said that Goddess Durga herself here and performed miracles during 14th century. The temple is made of stones and marbles and also has silver gates, which were constructed by Maharaja Ganga Singh. The temple is covered with a mesh to protect rats from becoming the prey of birds.

Junagarh Fort: The fort, which was built by then  king , Raj Singh, a general in army of Akbar, the great Mughal Emperor, is the most famous monuments of Bikaner. The fort took 5 years to be built and was constructed between 1588 and 1593. The fort, which is surrounded by nearly 986 m long wall, is renowned for its immense structure and magnificent architectural design. It features two entrances, a moat  and 37 bastions.  and the entrance is not placed on a raised platform, which is quite unlike other forts. Other prominent attractions such as:

  • Hawa Mahal
  • Chandra Mahal
  • Phool Mahal
  • Badal Mahal
  • Diwan-e-Khas
  • Dungar Mahal
  • Ganga Mahal
  • Rang Mahal

All these mentioned attractions are placed inside the fort. In addition, it also has a beautiful  Har Mandir, which used to be the place of worship for royal family.

Gajner Palace: This prominent tourist attraction of Bikaner is located on the bank of a lake and was constructed by then Maharaja, Raja Ganga Singh Ji, the legendary ruler of the kingdom of Bikaner. During the ancient times, the palace acted as the hunting and retreating lodge for the King of Bikaner and royal family. The palace is constructed from red sandstone, and features intricately carved pillars, jharokhas and screens, which present a perfect example of great craftsmanship. The palace is situated in the heart of a thick forest, where visitors can spot a wide range of migratory birds including the Imperial Sand Goose, apart from animals such as Antelopes and Black Bucks Nilgais, Chinkaras, Blue Bull and Deer.

Lalgarh Palace: This palace, which was constructed in 1902 by Maharaja Ganga Singh, to commemorate his father Maharaja Lal Singh Ji, is another major tourist hotspot of Bikaner. The magnificent construction of the palace in red sandstone is a symbol of excellent architectural skill. The designing of the palace, was done by Sir Swinton Jacob. it features fine filigree work and  lattice work done in sandstone. This palace is constructed in the combined architectural skill so of European,  Mughal and Rajput style. The palace has beautiful gardens with bougainvillea trees and dancing peacocks.
