Although the monastery was originally located on the Observatory Hill, but in 1879 it was shifted to its present location in Bhutia Busty, after it had to be rebuilt dur to the destruction caused by the 1815 Gorkha invasion. Later in 1934, the monastery again suffered severe damages due to an earthquake in the region in 1934.  Later the Raja of Sikkim restored the monastery to its present form.
