Baikuntha Chaturdash

Baikuntha Chatardash, also called Baikuntha Chatardashi, is a Hindu festival, which is celebrated on the 14th lunar day of the waxing moon fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the Kartika month (Nov-Dec). Baikuntha Chaturdashi is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva are worshipped individually or together in different temples in Maharashtra, Varanasi, Rishikesh and Gaya. As per the legend or story of Baikuntha Chanturdasi, Lord Vishnu visited the holy place of Varanasi to perform Lord Shiva Puja, on this day.

Baikuntha Chaturdash Day and Time

13 November 2016 / Sunday

The holy day Baikuntha Chaturdashi is also celebrated by the Marathas as per the custom set by Shivaji Maharaj and his mother Jijabai in Maharashtra and by the Gaud Saraswat Brahmins, in a slightly different format. According to Shiva Purana, once, the Lord Vishnu left his abode Vaikuntha and went to Varanasi to worship the Lord Mahadeva (Shiva) on this auspicious day.

He pledged to worship Lord Mahadev (Shiva) with a 1000 lotuses. While worshipping Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu found one lotus missing. Lord Vishnu, whose eyes are often compared to the lotus flower, plucked one of them and offerered it to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva was pleased with the sacrifice made by Lord Vishnu and restoreed Vishnu's eye. Furthermore, he rewarded him with the divine weapon or discus “Sudarshana chakra”.

On this special festival, Lord Vishnu should be worshipped with lamps (diyas), flowers, sandalwood, etc. Devotees should recite the ancient books Bhagavad Gita and Shri Sukta and offer Lotus flower for the puja. Worshipping Lord Vishnu with Vishnu Mantra and Stotram path in this festival takes a person to Baikunth dham (Divine Abode of Lord Vishnu) after his death. It is also believed that those who worship Lord Vishnu and chant Vishnu Mantra on this day get relief from all sorrows of life.
