Chapchar Kut –The Grand Festival in Mizoram

Chapchar Kut is one of the popular festivals celebrated in Mizoram. In Mizo language, Kut actually means festival.  Apart from several other festivals there are two major Kut celebrated in the state namely Pawl Kut and Mim Kut. All these three kuts are related to agricultural activities. These festival is observed in the month of March when the most arduous task is been operated i.e. Jungle clearing. It is usually celebrated as the spring festival with great gaiety and fervour. It is believed that this festival was firstly started during the period of 1450-1700 AD in a small village called Suaipui.

Celebration in Chapchar Kut

Chapchar Kut symbolizes the mark of welcoming spring by organizing this event for shower of blessings. The local residents of Mizoram dress up in colourful dress and represent the tribal life of the region. The festival begins by inaugurating the kute puipate followed by the traditional dance in group by the tribes. The different tribes of this region participate in this festival and perform fantastic dance forms known as Kut rore. The bamboo dance performed by the tribe is worth watching. People wear colourful dresses with hats on their heads which is made from parrots feather and beads. During the performance as well as for the complete period of festival they do not wear any shoes.

The traditional dance of bamboo is performed in this festival. In this dance performance women dance and men sit on the ground and beat the bamboo to create the musical environment. This festival is full of enjoyment, as people from all nearby villages participate in this event. The conventional songs cymbals, drum beats and gongs are just amazing and it will force you to dance along with them. You will witness the unique beauty of the festival during this event.
