Every year the birth anniversary of Guru Hargobind Singh is celebrated by Sikhs all over India and few corners of the world. Guru Hargobind Singh was the 6th guru of Sikhs and it is celebrated with good zeal by the Sikh community to mark the birthday of a great leader.
In 2013, the Guru Hargobind Singh Jayanti is on 5th July, Friday.

About Guru Hargobind Singh
Guru Hargobind Singh succeeded his father Guru Arjan dev on 25th May, 1606. He was forced to become a guru at the age of 11 when his father was executed. He was born in the village of Guru ki Wadali in Amritsar on 19th June, 1595. Due to his expertise in martial arts, he was considered one of the chief enemies of the great Mughal Empire. He was famous for keeping two swords with himself, while one denoted his spiritual authority; the other signified his leadership over his people. After he succeeded as the spiritual leader of the entire Sikh Community, he built a temple known as Akal Takht, meaning the throne of God, near the temple of Amritsar. Due to his skills in martial arts, he was able to train some of his followers and build an infantry of army and a fortress named Lohgarh in Amritsar. Thus his major contribution to Sikhism was to transform the Sikhs to soldier as well as saints, as was the need of the time.
He was a great leader and great humanitarian who fought not only for his own community but also other backward classes of several other religions. He tried to bring about new ideas in the society trying to reform it for the best. He died on 19th March, 1644 after nominating his grandson Guru Har Rai as his successor.

He was a Sikh in true sense who was not only courageous but also virtuous and a true human being in all aspects.

According to the Sikh community, the water of the lake of Golden Temple is equivalent to the nectar from the heaven. So, if one takes a dip in this holy water in this famous occasion then the person will be purged of all the impurities and all his sins. They take a dip before they go into the holy temple to take part in the celebration.
