For those residing on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the start of the year was with a bang as they celebrated the Island Tourism Festival from 5th January – 15th January this year. The festival is a treat for all the residents as well as the tourists. The festival is the most awaited event on the island and it is organised by the Andaman and Nicobar Administration. The festival is set on the island city and the capital of the island, Port Blair. The ten day festival has an array of shows and events like music, dance, exhibitions, drama, arts and crafts and the display of the natural beauty as flora and fauna is showcased.
The festival is also a real treat for children too. They can enjoy puppet shows and magic shows and also take part in competitions like drawing, singing and dancing. For the adults, there is so much that they can explore. The ones with an adventurous streak can enjoy aquatic sports like scuba diving, parasailing, etc. Competitions like canoe racing, scuba diving are open to the general public. They can have fun during the day and unwind in the evening on the floating boat for an amazing dinner on board.
The natives also give performs which are simply breathtaking and for more cultural richness, the organizers also invite artists and troupes from abroad to perform from all over the world. The festival is not only a way to increase earnings from tourists but is a celebration of the spirit of the people of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The aim of the festival is to bring about a conflation of cultures not only from India but from around the world as well. Apart from the festival, tourists can visit the Cellular Jail too.
