Karthikai Deepam or Karthikai Vilakkidu is a Tamil and Telugu Hindu, Festival of Lights. It is one of the oldest festivals celebrated by South people. The festival is observed in most Hindu homes and every temple, and falls in the month of Karttikai (mid-Nov to mid-Dec) as per the Tamil Calendar. Karthigai Deepam occurs on the day when the moon is in conjunction with the constellation Pournami and Karthigai (Pleiades). This constellation appears as a group of six stars in the sky in the shape of a pendant from the ear.

Karthigai Deepam finds reference in Sangam literature like Akanaṉūṟu and the poems of Auvaiyar. Legends say, once upon a time the Devtas, the heavenly Gods, put in their best efforts to have a full Darshan of Lord Shankar (Shiva). During this process Lord Vishnu took the form of a boar and Lord Brahma took the form of a swan conducted an extensive search in the sky and they did not him. Lord Shiva asked Brahmaji and Vishnu bhagwan to find out the precise location of his feet and his head. Since Lord Shankar took a gigantic form, they weren’t able to find him anyplace.

Therefore, Lord Shiva appeared before them in the form of a glowing light whose ends cannot be clear on the hill of Thiruvannamalai. Therefore, this special event is also known as Annamalai Deepam. At the zenith of the Hill, a big torch lighting on the peak of the hill and it is believed that Lord Shiva's Jyoti will be noticeable to this day. The Karthigai Deepam festival is celebrated in a special manner in Thiruvannamalai hill. Every year 1000 of devotees from Chennai and from all over India flock to Tiruvannamalai to see the remarkable Karthigai Deepam there.
