Sawai Gandharva Sangeet Mahotsav is a popular and important festival celebrated every year during month of December. It was during the year 1953 the festival started for the first time and today it has come a long way to be as one of the prestigious music festival in India. The festival is organized to commemorate and give away the honour to the great Indian musician Pandit Rambhan Kundgolkar, also known as Sawai Gandharva. The festival was started in the year 1953 by the great late Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. Later in his memory the mahotsav got renamed after his death. Each year, you can witness new flavours of music with favourable support from the Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal. The event last for three days in which musicians and artists from different parts of India participate to present their talent.
History behind Sawai Gandharva Sangeet Mahotsav (Pune)
Sawai Gandharva also known as Rambhau Kundgolkar was a well known Hindustani vocalist. He passed away on 12 September, 1952. To give Shradhanjali, a concert was specially organized on the 16th day after his death. At this event, noted disciples from the Indian music industry Smt Gangubai Hangal, Pandit Feroz Dastur and Pandit Bhimsen Joshi performed. Witnessing the grand success of the show, it lately become the important event in Pune and thus was grown exponentially all over India. In the start only Kirana Gharanas used to perform, but as the popularity reached heights, many Gharanas actively participated in the event to honour Sawai Gandharva. It was honour for all Indian artists to present their talent in front of all noted disciples from the industry.
