Why is World Diabetes Day celebrated on 14th November?

November 14th is an important date in the diabetes calendar. World Diabetes Day campaign also marks the birthday of Sir Frederick Grant Banting (a Canadian Medical Scientist) who, along with two other Medical scientists; Charles Herbert Best and John James Rickard Macleod, first discovered the idea which led to the discovery of Insulin in 1922. World Diabetes Day is globally recognised as a significant day and is now an official United Nations Day.

Every Year, this important day is centred on a theme related to diabetes. Topics covers diabetes and lifestyle, diabetes and obesity, diabetes and human rights, diabetes in the disadvantaged and the vulnerable, diabetes in children and diabetes in adolescents.

World Diabetes Day is celebrated globally by 230 member associations of the IDF (International Diabetes Federation). Participants include States of the United Nations, as well as other associations and companies, healthcare professionals and organizations. The global diabetes community counting diabetes organizations, International Diabetes Federation member associations, NGOs, health departments, civil society, companies, organizations, etc. develop a broad range of activities, tailored to a variety of groups.
