World Ozone Day

World Ozone Day
The World Ozozne Day is an annual event celebrated on 16th September every year to remember the signing of the Montreal Protocol on Substances That Deplete the Ozone Layer. The day, which has been celebrated since 1995, was selected by The United Nations General Assembly, intended to raise awareness and inspire governments and organizations to take constructive steps towards the protection of the depleting ozone layer.

The Importance of Ozone
Ozone is extremely importance for sustenance of life on earth as it protects the environment from the various harmful effects of the ultraviolet rays emitted by the sun. Ozone is a gas of light bluish color, which forms the outermost layer of the earth’s atmosphere and is fond between 10 to 50 kms above the earth’s surface. The layer acts as a shield to prevent the harmful rays from penetrating the atmosphere. This protects not only the humans from several harmful diseases but also protects other plant and animal life both on land and under water from being perished due to the damaging effects of sun’s ultraviolet rays. In addition, ozone also prevents the melting of glaciers, which can otherwise cause an alarming increase in the sea levels and thus threaten the very existence of life of earth.

The Montreal Protocol
Over the past several years, the international community and environmentalists have expressed serious concerns over the  severe damages caused to the earth’s atmosphere that have proved to extremely dangerous for the Ozone layer. This is what led the representatives from 24 countries to get together in Montreal in 1987, and sign an agreement, according to which the participating nations made a commitment to stop the production of substances that threatened the ozone layer.

Even though the goal has still not been achieved completely, significant measures have been taken by governments, environmentalists and even private organizations across the globe to prevent further damage to the ozone layer. This includes significant reduction in the use of products that produce CFC’s and other such gases which can damage the ozone layer significantly.

World Ozone Day Celebration
On the world ozone day, schools across the globe organize special functions to educate the younger generation about the significance of ozone and the ways to protect it. In addition, environmentalists and NGO’s working for the cause also organize debates, competitions and quizzes to raise awareness amongst the masses. Many award ceremonies are also organized to felicitate people working towards protecting the environment and especially the ozone layer.
