Goa formerly was a Portuguese Province. The Portuguese territory in India existed for nearly 450 years until the annexation by India in 1961. Today Goa is visited by large populations of National and International tourists and travellers throughout the year. The state has a rich variety of flora and fauna, as it is located on the Western Ghat range in an area classified as a biodiversity hotspot.
