History
Goa formerly was a Portuguese Province. The Portuguese territory in India existed for nearly 450 years until the annexation by India in 1961. The city of Margao is a historical site that still exhibits the cultural influences of the Portuguese lifestyle. The origin of the name of Goa can be traced to the Mahabharata where Goa is referred to as Govarahtra and it means the nation of cowherds.
Today Goa is visited by large populations of National and International tourists and travellers throughout the year. The state has a rich variety of flora and fauna, as it is located on the Western Ghat range in an area classified as a biodiversity hotspot.
