Jaldapara National Park – A Haven for Nature Lovers
Some Historical Facts
Nestled in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayan range, the Jaldapara national Park is a part of the Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal. The park covers an area of nearly 216.51 sq. kms that is spread over a large area of Terai grasslands in Northern Bengal. It is believed that the area was inhabited by the Toto tribes until the 1800 AD and was consequently known by the name of Totapara.
The wildlife sanctuary is famous for housing the largest number of one horned rhino, which is on the verge of extinction. The park was given the status of a sanctuary as early as 1941, because of preserving a wide range of flora and fauna, and was designated as a National Park only in May 2012.
Climate and Environment
The park enjoys a subtropical climate, which is ideal for the preservation and growth of a wide variety of plants as well as animals. The landscape is interspersed with different types of forests, including the wet-forests, the riverine forests and the dry-mixed forests, most of which are covered with tall elephant grass. The winters are cold and the summers hot and humid. The best time for visiting the park is between the months of November and March.
Animal Life
Even though the one horned Indian Rhinos are the greatest attraction of the Jaldapara national Park, it is also known for the various other animals and birds that are found here. Visitors can spot animals such as the Royal Bengal tigers, Elephants, Sambar, Spotted Deer, Hog Deer, Indian Bison and wild pigs to name a few.
The wildlife sanctuary is also known for the various species of migratory birds that can be spotted here. Bird watchers flock to the park to observe birds which include the crested eagle, Pallas’s fish eagle, shikra, Finn’s weaver, jungle fowl and many more. It is also among the few places in India where bird lovers can watch the Bengal Florican; In addition, the park also houses no less than 8 different species of fresh water turtles.
A large number of birds and animals found in the Jaldapara National Park are of endangered species and hence it is given of utmost significance for both the government and people working for the preservation of different forms of wildlife.
