Bara Imambara: This monument surely tops the list of must see places in Lucknow. This Shia prayer house was built in 1874 by the then Nawab of Lucknow, Asaf-ud-Daula and hence is also known as Asafi Imambara. The Imambara is the grandest building in the city and includes a large mosque, a labyrinth and a bowli, which is a step well and still has running water. It is believed that the design of the structure was selected though a competitive process which was quite uncommon in those days. This beautiful Mughal style building was the last of its kind in the region to be constructed without the use of iron or any other European elements.

Chota Imambara: Also popular by the name of Hussainabad Imambara, this magnificent monument was constructed by the Third Nawab of Awadh, Muhammad Ali Shah. He built it in 1838 with the aim of using it as his own mausoleum. Being beautifully decorated with lights, especially on festive occasions, the imambara also came to be known by the name of Palace of Lights. It is believed that the chandeliers for the imambara were specially brought in from Belgium. Constructed with gilded white marble, the walls of the imambara are decorated with Arabic calligraphy which further adds to its beauty and aesthetic appeal.

Rumi Darwaza: The Rumi Drawza presents a great example of the Awadhi architecture. This impressive gateway, which is also known as the Turkish Gate was constructed in 1784, during the era of Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula. It was gateway into the city of Lucknow and hence was decorated beautifully and the roads beyond it that led into the city had spectacular landscape. This 60 feet tall structure has a design that is similar to the Sublime Porte in Istanbul.
