![]() Mussoorie – A Great Place to Escape the Maddening Summer Heat Mussoorie as Tourist Destination Christ Church: The church, which is considered to be one of oldest churches present in the Himalayan ranges, is located in the vicinity of a heritage hotel. Established by the British community living in the region, in 1836, the church features a deodar tree, planted by Princess of Wales, who later became the Queen of England, and visited the church in 1906. The church is renowned for its Gothic style architecture and design and the events of the life of Jesus Christ represented by its stained glass windows. The church also features an old William Hill organ that is nearly a century old. Tapovan: This magnificent place is situated on the shores of River Ganga, and is believed to be the site where Guru Dronacharya, the famous character from Mahabharta performed reparation. The place holds a great historical and religious significance, primarily because of housing the ashram of Guru Dronacharya. Located amidst lush green forests, the place is today abounded by numerous Sadhus and sages, who consider penance to be the only way of attaining enlightenment. Kempty Falls: Discovered in 1835, this beautiful waterfall is situated at a height of nearly 4,500 ft and has water about 40 ft. The credit of developing this place as a tourist destination goes to John Mekinan, who was mesmerized by the panoramic sights and views of the place. The place is named after Camp –tea, which was the area known for being the tea-party venue of the Britishers. This is one of the largest waterfalls, which after a long journey through the rocks, culminates its journey in the plains. Tourists visiting the falls can also enjoy other activities like swimming, fishing or even bathing under the falls. Gun Hill: The Gun Hill is one of the major tourist hot spots of Mussoorie having great historical significance. The place is named so because during the pre-independence era, a canon was fired everyday at a specific time from the hill, which gave an indication of the correct time to the local people. The hill is located at a height of 400 ft above The Mall, the main shopping street of Mussoorie, and in the present times a water reservoir is placed here. The hill also provides a great view of the snow peaked mountains as well as The Mall. Nag Devta Temple: This ancient temple devoted to the Snake God, is located at a distance of nearly 6 kms form the heart of the town. Situated on the Cart Mackenzie Road, the temple is frequented by visitors, especially on the occasion of Nag Panchami, when it is decorated in a magnificent manner. It is on this occasion that elaborate rituals are performed in the temple, which attracts countless visitors here.
