Nagarhole

Nagarhole- The game sanctuary
Nagarhole is a town with a vast variety of wildlife and the famous Nagarhole National Park. It is considered to be one of the finest tiger reserves in India.  This haven does not only offer a diversity of wildlife but also gives one the much needed break in the midst of rich and lush flora and fauna. The word ‘Nagarhole’ originates from the Kannada words ‘Nagar’, for snake and ‘hole’, meaning stream. In Nagarhole, the best accommodation with a fabulous view is offered at the Kabini Lake area of the reserve.

History of Nagarhole
Originally in 1955, the Nagarhole forest was an exclusive hunting area for the Maharajas of Mysore, like Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali. By 1974, the forest began to gain importance in wildlife conservation and was named as the Nagarhole National Park. Set against the backdrop of the Brahmagiri Mountains and inclusive of the Kabini River, this sanctuary is considered to be one of the most unique wildlife experiences in India. Recently the park has been named as ‘Rajiv Gandhi National Park’.

Indulge in various activities at Nagarhole
A Visit to the Nagarhole National Park: This exciting National park is located in the Kodagu and Mysore districts of Karnataka. In 1999, the park was established as a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and declared as a Tiger Reserve. The park is a flourishing forest cover that involves dazzling waterfalls, radiant streams, beautiful hills and abyss like valleys. It has a magnificent range of animals like tigers, leopards, gaur, sloth bear, elephants, Indian bison, mugger crocodile, little cormorant etc living in their natural habitat and encompassing a truly wild and exotic atmosphere around it. Due to its strict rules and wildlife conservation concerns, the park is closed for safaris during the mating season of the animals and monsoons. The forest department has accommodations for visitors in ‘Murkal’ guest house. Regular educational caps for students are held and the forest department provides concessions for organized educational trips.

Walking Tour: The geography of the park is undulated with many natural seasonal streams and regulated tanks; hence it is an ideal destination for rare species and migratory birds. Buried in rich tropical forests the climate here is humid.  A supervised walk in the park along its springs and waterfall will help you get acquainted with the life in the wild and gives you the exciting impressions of what it must have been like for the Mysore Maharajs to go hunting into the heart of beauty.

Crocodile Ride: The Coracle ride on the Kabini River is must to complete the trip. But if you are afraid of water you can also go on elephant rides and have walks bird watching early in the morning to rejuvenate your senses. In the end if you are still not satisfied, then you can embark on drive to the nearby Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary.

Bird Sanctuary and the Alternate National Park: The Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary and Bandipur National Park are two exquisite locations near Nagarhole. The variety of birds in Ranganathituu Bird Sanctuary along with the wild Asiatic Elephants in Bandipur National Park are ideal thrills for nature lovers.
