Synopsis on Ooty:
Udhagamandalam, popularly known as Ooty is a municipality town of the district of Nilgiri of the state of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the popular hill stations of the southern part of India. It is located in the Nilgiri hill region. When we look back in history we will get to learn that this region was for the first time occupied by Toda people. These people used to belong from a small community of pastoral. After the Toda people this region came under the rule of the East India Company by end of 18th century. The main source of earning for the people of Ooty is tourism business, agricultural activities, medicine manufacturing and also photographic film business. The natural beauty of this small town and its cool climate attract tourists in large number every year.
 

History of Ooty:
Ooty is also called as "The Blue Mountains" and located deep within the Nilgiri hills. In the historical period Nilgiri region was ruled by the Ganga Kings and in later part by the kings of Hoysala. The Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana captured the Wynad region and Nilgiri region during eleventh century. Tipu Sultan for the first time extended his region by construction a hideout cave in this region. Basically earlier it was a tribal zone and the tribal group which used to stay there includes Todas, Badagas, Kotas and Alu Kurumbas.
 

Places to visit in Ooty:
If anyone asks to describe Ooty in few words, then we can say it is a place where there is combination of Lofty Mountains and great lakes along with dense forests with miles long garden of tea and great scenic beauty. We are going to mention the major places which are must for visit when you go to this hill station named Ooty.
 

Government Rose Garden:  This Garden is the largest rose garden of India. This garden is situated in the Elk Hill slopes of Vijayanagaram. More than 20000 varieties of roses are available in this garden.

Ooty Botanical Gardens:  This garden was started in the year 1847 and now maintained by the government of Tamil Nadu. Different species of plants are present in this garden.

Ooty Lake: 65 acres of area is covered by the Ooty Lake. Boat House is there and tourists can enjoy boating in this lake and enjoy the nature. John Sullivan is the man behind the construction of this lake in Ooty. The mountain streams are dammed down via the Ooty valley to form this lake.

Stone House: It is the first bungalow made out of stone in Ooty. This house was again built by John Sullivan.  He acquired land from the Toda people for just Re.1.

St. Stephen's Church: The famous church is located in the road to Mysore from Ooty. The foundation of the church was done on 23 April 1829 by Stephen Rumbold Lushington, the governor of Madras during that time.

Wax World, Ooty:  This Wax Museum is the house to many wax statues of great personalities in the historic period. This Museum is operating in a house of Ooty which is 142 years old.

Things to buy in Ooty:

Ooty Chocolates: These Chocolates are specially prepared by the local people of Ooty and tastes really awesome. It will be hard to find this taste even in any branded chocolates. When it melts in your mouth you will enjoy the unique taste of it. These are available at a rate much lower than the branded companies' chocolate.

Pickles:  The pickles of Ooty are famous all across globe and it is must for you to collect when you visit Ooty. Pickles of lemon, mango, and other vegetables are very popular and tasty too.
