Introduction to Patiala
Patiala is a south-eastern city of Punjab. Also known as the city of gardens, this city is located around the castle, Qila Mubarak. Patiala has been under the reign of many kings few of which are Jat ruler Maharaja Narendra Singh, Maharaja Karam Singh and others. From the time of independence in 1947 till date, Patiala has been a major education hub for the whole of Punjab. Patiala houses few of the very well-known colleges in North India namely Punjabi University, Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Govt. Bikram College of Commerce and others. Patiala speaks volumes about its emergence through its architecture, culture and lifestyle of the kings and its numerous palaces. Its good connectivity to nearby places ensures continuous inflow of tourists.

What you cannot afford to miss when in Patiala

    • Qila Mubarak:Qila Mubarak in located in the heart of the city and houses the main palace, Qila Androon.  It was brought to life by two brave military men namely Sardar Lakhna and Baba Ala Singh way back in 1763. Until the construction of the Old Moti Bagh Palace, Qila Mubarak was where the Royals of Patiala resided. The architecture of the palace is a perfect combination of Mughal and Rajasthan. A small portion of Qila Mubarak complex reflects the British where one can see fireplaces made of marble, Gothic arches and built-in toilets.
    • Sheesh Mahal:This is an interesting part of the Old Moti Bagh Palace. It was constructed in the 19th century. The Palace of mirrors comprises of numerous frescoes. The beauty of this palace is further enhanced with the lake right in front of it. The famous Lakshman Jhula is constructed right across this lake and is visited by tourists in large numbers throughout the year; it is a replica of the original one in Rishikesh.
    • Baradari Gardens:Another place of Visit in Patiala is the Bardari Gardens that encompasses the Baradari Palace in the north of the Patiala city. One can find exclusive shrubs and rare trees here which were planted during the reign of Maharaja Rajindera Singh.

Other places of Interest
Other places on can visit include the Darbar Hall or the Divan Khana which is used mainly to address a really large audience.  Moti Bagh Palace which was completed in the 20th century has the Rajasthan type of jharokas and chhatris along with beautiful terraces and water channels.

Shopping in Patiala
There are many things that one can buy from the numerous shopping markets in this city. The range of carpets and handicrafts is simply amazing. Patiala is very popular for its Phulkari work. Wedding accessories like paranda, Punjabi Jutti, bangles, Colored nala’s and others can be bought from the Qila Mubarak complex and the Sirhindi Gate. The Patiala suits for women are popular throughout the country. Other shopping attractions include the famous pickle market called the Aachar Bazaar in the Sirhindi Gate. Various books can be bought from the really big book market in Arna Barna Chowk.
