Introduction of Silchar
The city of Silchar is located in the district of the state of Assam. It is the second largest city of the state and also serves as the headquarters of Cachar district. Silchar is also nicknamed as Island of Peace by late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The residents of Silchar are mainly of Bengali origin followed by other groups like Barman along with tribal from Nagaland called Nagas. Silchar is located on the bank of Barak River. Once during the colonial rule, the British considered this place as an important dock for ships and vessels. The main language spoken here is Sylheti by the Bengali population. Rice is the staple food and fish is also available.

Geography of Silchar
The climate of Silchar is tropical in nature. The summer is usually hot and humid with heavy rainfall at times. The winter season starts from the month of November and continues till February. The heavy rainfall at Silchar raises flood at times. Silchar had also seen three major floods in the year 1986, 1991 and 2004.

Communication
Silchar is well connected to other parts of Assam and the country. Regular bus operates from Agartala, Imphal, Guwahati and Aizwal.
If travelling by train, Silchar is connected with meter gauge railway tracks to Lumding which further connects to Guwahati. The meter gauge railway was first built by the British which offers a splendid journey all through.
The nearest airport to Silchar is at Kumbhigram which lies at a distance of 22 km. It is also considered the fourth busiest airport of Assam.

History of Silchar
Right from 1850, Silchar was one vibrant and important location under the colonial rule of British. It was during when the first polo club was setup here and is the oldest in the world.

Get Around Silchar
Besides some important relics and the meter gauge railway, one can visit Khaspur. It is capital of Old Kachari kingdom. The ruins of the fort and its surroundings make it a wonderful place for visit. Furthermore one can also visit Bhuban Hills which is also a good place to spend an enjoyable time amid the lush green beauty. Besides some other interesting location worth visit are:

    • Bhubaneshwar Temple – It is one of a renowned temple of Lord Shiva in the entire state of Assam frequented by devotees from the state.
    • Iskon Temple – It is the temple for Lord Krishna from the devotees of Iskon.
    • Kancha Kanti Kali Mandir – Another important temple of Goddess Kachakanti, one celebrated location in the entire South Assam. Every year many devotees visit here to pay homage to the lord. Furthermore its historical relevance also bears ample significance to visit this location.
    • Gandhibag Park: It is one nice park located in the city frequented by local residents and also by the tourist.
    • Maniharan Tunnel: It is one popular pilgrim spot located around 5 km from Bhubaneshwari Temple.

Buying in Silchar
Silchar is famous for tea and Shutki – dried up fish which smells pungent but Shidhal-Shutki is quite famous amongst fish lovers.
