Tamasic Diet

The Tamasik (Literal meaning-Dark) food or diet means the items, when consumed, create imbalances at the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level. As per ancient Indian science of life i.e. Ayurveda, whatever we eat or drink, not only affects our physical body, but also our mind and emotions. As per Vedic thoughts, for the upliftment and enlightenment in totality, one should abstain from Tamasic foods at all. 

The Tamasic diet consists of dark meat, lamb, pork, beef, fish, onions, garlic, mushrooms, some fermented foods, including vinegar, bread, pastries and cakes, all old and stale, overripe, under ripe, rotten foods, all intoxicants e.g. tobacco, drugs, alcohol; all fast foods,   over processed, over fried,  preserved, canned or frozen food items.
Continuous consumption of Tamasic diet erodes Prana, or life energy from the system and fills it with vice urges e.g. greed, hyper sex, anger, over attachment etc. called tamasic behavior pattern. The overall impact is dull and depressing or anxiety and stress. 

At the physical level, Tamasic food disrupts the proper functioning of the immune system and becomes instrumental in variety of mental and physical diseases. However, if taken in moderate quantity, coupled with major consumption of Satvik and Rajasik food, causes stability in the person.
