Akshaya Navami

Akshaya Navami is the important Hindu Festival observed on the 9th day (Navami) of the Shukla Paksha (the bright fortnight of the moon) in Kartik Mas (month) in the Hindu calendar.   The word ‘Akshaya’ implies, the rewards for performing any rituals or charitable activities on this day benefits the devotees not only in the present life but also during their future births.

The day is of great importance in North India especially in Varanasi. This festival is celebrated two days prior to ‘Dev Uthani Ekadashi’. Akshaya Navami is also known as Kushmanda Navami as Lord Vishnu is believed to have defeated Demon Kushmanda and thus helped to annihilate Adharma.

According to the Legends, it is believed that on this auspicious day, the era of ‘Satyug’ started and therefore it is also famous as ‘Satya Yugadi’, Akshaya Navami Pooja is an auspicious day for Daan-Punya (Donation) activities. Moreover, Akshaya Navami is also celebrated in several parts of India as ‘Amla Navami’. On this holy festival, Amla tree or Goose Berry Tree is worshipped as it is considered being the abode of all Deities.

The Parikrama of Mathura -Vrindavan is also considered auspicious on this day. Hindu devotees from every part of the country gather on this day to earn maximum benefits. Anvla navmi or Akshaya navami Puja is of special importance for women. Ladies observe a strict vratham or fast on Akshaya Navami. They pass the day without eating any food and involve themselves in several activities like Bhajans, Kirtans and Akshaya Navami Katha.

It is also believed that any good deeds done on this day give you good result. Doing secret donations on Akshaya navami is also of great importance. Offering prayers on this day with full devotion and enthusiasm is believed to be highly rewarding. Prayers offered to the Deities on Akshaya navami grants accomplishment of all the wishes and ultimately lead the person on the path of liberation or ‘Moksha’.
