Parashurama Jayanti

Parashurama Jayanti is observed as the birth anniversary of 6th incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Lord Parashuram.  Parasuram Jayanti is celebarted on Shukla Paksha tritiya in the month of Vaishakha. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Parashurama was born during Pradosh Kala and therefore the day when Tritiya falls during Pradosh Kala, that specific day is considered for Parashurama Jayanti celebrations. Observing fasts and other religious works have been the trademarks of this day for centuries. 

Significance of Parshuram Jayanti

It is believed that Parashurama Jayanti is celebrated because Lord Parshuram was born on this day. It is believed that Tretayug began on this day. According to Bhagvat, Lord Parshuram was born on this special event to destroy the kings of Haideya Dynasty ruled by Kartaveerya Arjun (Sahastra Bahu). He was a cruel king. Parshuram was the 5th son of Rishi Jamdagni and Renuka. He had four elder brothers: Rumanvant, Sushen, Vishwa & Vishwavasu.

According to beliefs, he defeated Kshatriyas (clan of rulers and warriors) a lot of times. He was born in the Earth to free the world of Kshatriyas’ pride. Lord Parshuram was taught by Dronacharya. He also assumes critical parts in the Ramayana and Mahabharata, serving as tutor to Karna, Bhishma and Drona. Parshuram has huge knowledge and was a great warrior. He always wanted to live for the benefit of mankind.

He was a great human being. The character of Parshuram has been depicted one of the eight Chiranjivi (immortals) in ancient religious texts along with the Bali, Hanuman, Vibheeshan, Markandeya, Kripa, Vyasa and Drona’s son Ashwatthama, in Kalyug, Lord  Along with the sages, Kripa, Vyasa and Drona's son Ashwatthama, in Kalyug, Lord Parashurama is considered to be the powerful among the rishis. Parshurama is also called as the Kul guru of Kashyap and Bharadwaj gotra. He lived among the last Treta and Dvapara Yugas.

Lord Parshuram’s different names include:

  • Bhargava-  (descendant of Bhrigu)
  • Ramabhadra-  (means kind Rama)
  • Jamadagnya - (son of Jamadagni)
  • Bhrigupati– (God of Bhrigu dynasty)
  • Bhriguvanshi – (as he belongs to a Bhrigu ancestor/ lineage)

It is believed that any auspicious work done on this day gives profitable results. Parashurama Jayanti is considered to be auspicious for any undertaking. Parshuram Jayanti is celebrated with enthusiasm and a lot of dedication by Hindus. Originally, Lord Parshuram’s name was Rama. Therefore, it is also said that Lord Ram was born before Ram.
