Vat Savitri Puja
Vat Savitri Puja or Vrat Purnima or Wat Purnima (वट पूर्णिमा) is a festival for married women celebrated on the new moon or full moon or day (Purnima) of the Jyeshtha month of the Hindu calendar. Wata purnima, Vrat Savitri Puja mainly falls in the month of May or June. Vat Savitri is an amalgamation of two words 'Vat' & 'Savitri'. Vat means Banyan tree (Bargad ka ped) and Savirtri means ‘Devi’. Wife ties the cotton thread around the banyan tree or waṭ, which is called "pipal puja", for the success and long life of their husbands. It honours Savitri, the legendary wife of Satyavan who saved her husband's soul from the clutches of Lord Yama. What Legend Says? According to legend Savitri, the legendary wife of Satyavan tricked Lord Yama, the lord of death, and forced him to return the life of her husband. Hence, Married ladies observe Savitri Vrat for safety and long life of their husband.
Vat Savitri Puja 2016: Date 05 June / Sunday As per Hindu mythology, Banyan tree reflects the existence of Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva (Mahesh). Therefore, sitting under this Holy tree and listening Savitri Katha (legends) is abundantly fruitful and truly fulfils all wishes. During this festival, married women observe vrat (fast) for three days. Married (also called Saubhagyawati women) wear bridal dresses, elegant jewellery. Savitri is worshiped as a Goddess on this day. Women engage in performing rituals and worshiping Banyan (Wata) tree and listen to the Legend of Savitri. They give water to the holy Banyan tree, sprinkle red powder (kumkum) on it and tie threads on Vat (banyan) tree’s trunks. Then they go 7 times around the tree (called the pradakshina or parikrama). This fast or Savitri Pujan is very fruitful to all those women who perform it. Vat Savitri Vrat bestows luck, children and fulfils all desires of ladies. For Indian women this vrat (fast) shows a great importance. It is believed that this special Vrat even can turn utmost bad fortune of a woman into a good one. With Wata Purnima Vrat or Vat Savitri Vrat, a lady with her BAD fortune can achieve the comforts of the world, zenith of happiness and a relaxed life. After worship, women feed Brahamans (Priests) and donate them cloths to accept their blessings. After the successful completion of all the rituals, devotees bring back some holy food (Bhoga).
