A Brief History
Kaushambi, a district in the state of Uttar Pradesh, is renowned for being seat of Buddhist teachings. Founded by a Chedi prince Kusa also known as Kusamba, Kaushambi was the capital of Vatsa Janpad in ancient India. Later, it earned fame when Gautam Buddha visited Kaushambi frequently to spread the teachings of Buddhism. King Asoka also held a deep affection for the city and proved the same by placing one of the famous Asoka Pillars here. In the modern times, Kaushambi is a district of Allahabad division and a favorite tourist destination for people interested in the ancient Indian history.
History says that Lord Buddha after attaining enlightenment spends the sixth as well as the ninth year in Kaushambi. This City is having a special place in the book written by Chinese traveler Fa-Hien. This city is located on the banks of river Yamuna.

Places to Visit in Kaushambi
 The Kaushambi Fort: This is an ancient fort built during the reign of the Vatsa Empire. Although, in the present times the fort is mostly in ruins, it is often frequented by historians and archeologists, to learn something new about the lifestyle of the people in this region during that era.
Ruins of Asoka Pillar: The great King Asoka is believed to have constructed two pillars in Kaushambi having inscriptions in Pali. Even though only one pillar exists today, it is also in ruins. Despite that it is still considered as a great historical site that visitors coming to this ancient city must see.
Sheetla Temple of Kara Dham: This temple dedicated to Mata Sheetla is situated on the banks of river Ganga. Considered to be one of the most important of the total of 51 shaktipeeths of Maa Sheetla, the temple attracts devotees from across the country.
Ghoshit Ram Vihar: This place is famous for being the residence of Lord Buddha during his frequent visits to Kaushambi. The place is mentioned specially in the Buddha literature, especially for the speeches given by Gautam Buddha to his followers at this place.
Digambar Jain Temple: The Digambar Jain Temple of Kaushambi is dedicated to the 6th Tirthankur Lord Padma Prabhu. The temple which is also famous by the names of Prabhasgiri or Prabhosa is located on the banks of river Yamuna. This temple, which was constructed in 1834, is considered to be a major place of pilgrimage for Jains.

Surkha mango: Kaushambi is well known for its fertile soil which is ideal for growing the famous mango variety of Surkha. People visiting the area during the mango season are sure to feel tempted to buy this rich, pulpy fruit which attracts everyone with its great fragrance and taste.
