Panchamukhi Hanuman ji is the most prominent incarnation of Lord Hanuman. This metallic five face Hanuman Idol has always cleared all the way for the success of power, fame, courage and healthy physique. Panchamukhi Hanuman Stotram is performed for Panchamukhi form of Lord Hanuman. Panchamukhi Hanuman Idol has five faces and ten weapons. Five faces of Panchamukhi form of Hanuman are Lord Hanuman, Lord Garuda, Lord Narasimha, Lord Varaha, and Lord Hayagriva.
The foundation of Panchmukhi Hanuman Ji can be traced from a tale in Ramayana. At the time of the battle between Lord Ram and Ravana, Ravana took help of Ahiravana, who was the ruler of Pathala Lok (Nether world).
Lord Hanuman in order to defend Lord Ram and Lakshman formed Panchmukhi Hanuman Kavach with his tail. Ahiravana took the appearance of Vibeeshana and took Lord Ram and Lakshman to pathala lok (Nether world). Lord Hanuman ji entered pathala lok searching Lord Rama and Lakshman. He found out that to slaughter Ahiravana he had to blow out five lamps ablaze in five diverse directions at the same time, so he took the Panchamukhi Hanuman form as Hanuman, Narasimha, Hayagriva, Varaha and Garuda faces, extinguished the lamps, and killed Ahiravana
The Panchamukhi appearance of Lord Hanuman has the following five faces:
- Lord Hanuman (a passionate devotee of Lord Rama) is facing in the east direction
- Lord Narasimha (an embodiment of Lord Vishnu, who killed Hiranyakashipu) is facing in the south direction
- Lord Garuda ( the mount of Lord Krishna) is facing in the west direction
- Lord Varaha (an embodiment of Lord Vishnu, who killed the devil Hiranyaksha) is facing in the north direction
- Hayagriva (an embodiment of Lord Vishnu, considered the God of knowledge) is facing upwards
- East facing Lord Hanuman, he grants Ishta Siddhi to the humanity.
