Significance of Vishnu Sahasranamam

The Vishnu Sahasranams “The Thousand Names of Vishnu”  is one of the most sacred and powerful hymns in Hinduism. It is a 149-verse stotra listing 1,000 divine names of Lord Vishnu, each revealing a unique aspect of His glory, qualities, forms, and cosmic roles as the preserver and supreme reality (Parmatma).

The Mahabharata Legend

The Vishnu Sahasranam meaning “The Thousand Names of Lord Vishnu,” is one of the most sacred and powerful hymns in Hinduism. This divine stotra consists of 1,000 names of Lord Vishnu, with each name representing a unique aspect of His divine qualities, cosmic powers, and supreme nature as the Preserver of the Universe.

The importance of Vishnu Sahasranamam is explained in the Mahabharata, where Bhishma Pitamah advised Yudhishthira that chanting Lord Vishnu’s thousand names is the highest path for attaining peace, protection, liberation, and freedom from suffering. Bhishma proclaimed that the devotees who chant or listen to Vishnu Sahasranamam with faith are blessed with inner peace, prosperity, purification of karmas, divine protection and ultimately Moksha (liberation).

Performing the Vishnu Sahasranamam Puja during the sacred period of Mal Maas / Purushottam Maas enhances its spiritual power many times over.

According to the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, regular and proper recitation of Vishnu Sahasranama with devotion and prescribed rituals can help resolve a significant portion of life’s difficulties and karmic challenges.
